And so 2009 draws to a close

Message from Prof Barry Dwolatzky, Director of the JCSE at Wits

Most will agree that 2009 has been a really tough year! The global economy has been in deep recession. South African companies and government departments have been tightening their belts. The optimism of the past few years has been replaced with a much more sober and cautious mood. We are all looking forward to some "quiet time" over the upcoming Christmas break.

We at the JCSE have been working hard over the past year to ensure that we emerge from these difficult times a stronger and more capable organisation. Our reason for existence is to support the growth and success of the local ICT sector. When South Africa and the World emerge from the current economic difficulties there will be even greater opportunities for software developers both locally and abroad. The South African and African ICT sectors will still need world class skills and world class practices to compete with the best in the world.

In 2009 our focus was on consolidating existing JCSE programmes. We strengthened the organisation. We laid the foundations for exciting new programmes and activities. While 2010 may be another challenging year, the JCSE will be working hard to play a key role in ensuring that the South African ICT sector grows and prospers.

All of us at the JCSE wish all of you a peaceful, restful and enjoyable holiday season ... and a WONDERFUL 2010!!

Best Regards
Barry Dwolatzky
