POPI: What you need to know

South Africa's new Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act is set to change how ICT professional deal with the collection and management of personal information in all of its many forms. Danie Strachan, from Adams and Adams, will give some insights into POPI and how it will impact IT professionals.

POPI: What you need to know

The "Protection of Personal Information" (POPI) Act has been signed into law. When it comes into force it will place stringent responsibilities - backed up by severe penalties (including prison sentences) - on those responsible for managing personal information. The Act will apply to any information regarding clients or suppliers, including contact details and correspondence. Human resources and payroll data, curricula vitae, applications for employment, CCTV records, performance reviews and internal e-mail records are also subject to POPI's requirements.

Danie Strachan - Danie Strachan is a partner at Adams & Adams, a leading law firm in South Africa. Adams & Adams has the largest intellectual property law practice in that country, supported by a strong corporate and commercial practice. Danie specialises in commercial and regulatory law. He is particularly interested in consumer protection,  promotions and marketing law, data protection and the commercialisation of intellectual property. He is a frequent speaker at seminars and in-house training events. His articles on current legal topics have appeared in a variety of South African publications and he has been interviewed on a number of local radio stations. 

Danie is an admitted attorney, notary public and qualified trade mark practitioner. He obtained his LLB degree (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria. He is a fellow of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property law and a member of the Licensing Executives Society. He is listed for franchising in Who's Who Legal.
